When we got back to the studio, we all drew machines for the forest, the instructors and the participants working collaboratively. In the afternoon, we continued this exercise by sharing our machine drawings and making quick prototypes of the proposed devices. It was raining hard so we worked in the large interior studio, attempting to collaborate as a full group by connecting our individual machines into a larger collective machine.
In the slide lecture that preceeded this project we looked at a range of artists, designers and architects including:
Mel Chin, Wolfgang Laib, Janet Cardiff, Bruce Chao, Toshikatsu Endo, Anya Gallaccio, Mel Bochner, Tony Cragg, Guiseppe Penone, Allan McCollum, Vija Celmins, Felix Gonzalew-Torres, Roni Horn, Spencer Finch, Dion, Mark, Marc Quinn, Robert Morris, Dan Graham, David Hammons, Sissel Tolaas, Eve Andrée Laramée, Katy Schimert, Roxy Paine, Chris Welsby
Begin by taking a walk in the forest.
Find a place to sit by yourself and just observe.
When you hear a call, return to the studio.
